Other Vehicles --> Connected Vehicle Roadside Equipment:
vehicle location and motion

Definitions

vehicle location and motion (Information Flow): Data describing the vehicle's location in three dimensions, heading, speed, acceleration, braking status, and size.

Other Vehicles (Source Physical Object): 'Other Vehicle OBEs' represents other connected vehicles that are communicating with the host vehicle. This includes all connected motorized vehicles including passenger cars, trucks, and motorcycles and specialty vehicles (e.g., maintenance vehicles, transit vehicles) that also include the basic 'Vehicle OBE' functionality that supports V2V communications. This object provides a source and destination for information transfers between connected vehicles. The host vehicle on-board equipment, represented by the Vehicle OBE physical object, sends information to, and receives information from the Other Vehicle OBEs to model all connected vehicle V2V communications in ARC-IT.

Connected Vehicle Roadside Equipment (Destination Physical Object): 'Connected Vehicle Roadside Equipment' (CV RSE) represents the Connected Vehicle roadside devices that are used to send messages to, and receive messages from, nearby vehicles using Dedicated Short Range Communications (DSRC) or other alternative wireless communications technologies. Communications with adjacent field equipment and back office centers that monitor and control the RSE are also supported. This device operates from a fixed position and may be permanently deployed or a portable device that is located temporarily in the vicinity of a traffic incident, road construction, or a special event. It includes a processor, data storage, and communications capabilities that support secure communications with passing vehicles, other field equipment, and centers.

Communication Solutions

Solutions are sorted in ascending Gap Severity order. The Gap Severity is the parenthetical number at the end of the solution.

Selected Solution

US: SAE Basic Safety Messages - WAVE WSMP

Solution Description

This solution is used within the U.S.. It combines standards associated with US: SAE Basic Safety Messages with those for V-X: WAVE WSMP. The US: SAE Basic Safety Messages standards include upper-layer standards required to implement V2V safety information flows. The V-X: WAVE WSMP standards include lower-layer standards that support connectionless, near constant, ultra-low latency vehicle-to-any communications within ~300m using the WAVE Short Messaging Protocol (WSMP) over IEEE WAVE in the 5.9GHz spectrum. The broadcast mode is interoperable with M5 FNTP.

Basis This data is intentionally transmitted to everyone via a broadcast. Much of its information content can also be determined via other visual indicators Incorrect information could lead to the system not operating properly. If the system does not properly know where the vehicle is, it cannot make an accurate decision about whether there is going to be a pedestrian in the crosswalk that the vehicle is approaching. This can have a safety impact. This data is required for the system to operate properly. If this data is not available, the system cannot give accurate warning information.
